| There has
been many summer activities that took place at the La Grange Community Youth Center during
the summer. On June 15th at 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., a Bike Safety program was sponsored early in the season by
the VFW of La Grange and Canton. The Lewis County Sheriff Department and the La
Grange Police Department presented the program. Literature on seat belt safety and
bicycle safety was handed out to each child, along with reflector tape for their bikes,
which was donated by the Hannibal Wal-Mart. Pizza was served for refreshments. The first two weeks of July was
"Summer Fun" at the
center. Around 25 children participated in activities that helped with reading,
writing and math skills. Some of their activities included were board games, math
facts, reading in small groups or one-on-one, plays, computer-generated stories, computer
math facts, computer reading skills, counting money, and much more. Each day there
was a craft and a snack time. Many of the crafts reflected a patriotic theme around
the 4th of July. Each activity and each craft was a part of a learning to follow
directions. The activities started at 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. This was so
exciting and successful that we hope that it is done again next year. Teachers that
participated were, Mary Jo Ehrlich, Barb Funkenbusch, Linda Hutcherson, and Donna
Pickett. Sharon Sherwood organized and arranged for the "Summer Fun".
Following the "Day
In The Park," that was held on Saturday afternoons in June, for the younger kids, a
party was held from 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. at the center. "Jesus Loves You", was
the theme. A movie about loving your neighbor, crafts, bubbles, and refreshments
were enjoyed.
Buds and Blossoms is a program held at the center on
Mondays from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. by Sharon Feldkamp. They have enjoyed doing many
activities. Each week they are introduced to something new. Learning to enjoy
watching things grow. The group dug up and planted some flowers along the side of
the building that was donated by Keller's in Quincy, IL. They are responsible for
watering them.
On Monday, June 1st, the Center was
re-opened to the public at 4:30 p.m. after being closed for roof repairs.
On Saturday, March 23,
2002 the final community effort of the day was the La Grange Community Youth Center's
first teen dance in the new building. It had a good group of kids at it.
We had around 70 teens. They were from everywhere. Wayland, Hannibal, Canton,
Quincy, Lewistown, like I said from everywhere. At 10:30, the end of the dance,
Betty opened the rest of the center up for them to see. The excitement was
great. Betty said she'd have pictures of the dance soon to put up on the site. |
